Black Pixel Studio exists because of a gap I kept running into.

In 2013, an Ethiopian organisation that needed serious digital work had two realistic options. Take a cheap local shortcut and get something that looked finished but could not be maintained, extended, or even handed over. Or pay an international firm a price that ruled the project out entirely.

Neither option left you owning what you had paid for. That is the gap we were built to close: the responsiveness of a local team, working to the standards international partners expect.

So we made one commitment that the rest of the studio is organised around. When we deliver, you get everything — one hundred per cent of the code, the intellectual property, the assets and the accounts. No licences we hold over you. No domain registered in our name. No architecture designed to make leaving expensive.

That commitment has teeth, and they point at us. It means we cannot afford to build anything a competent team could not pick up and run without us. If our work only functions while we are still attached to it, we have not finished it.

The same principle governs how we work week to week. We state scope and cost plainly. When something turns out to be harder than we estimated, we say so while there is still time to do something about it. You should never have to ask what stage your project is at.

We invest in modern tooling, and we choose it for how long it will hold up rather than how current it sounds. Geography should never dictate quality. A platform built in Addis Ababa should survive the same scrutiny as one built anywhere else — and that standard, more than any particular technology, is the point of this studio.

We started as a small design shop. We are now a digital engineering studio: custom software, e-commerce, cloud infrastructure and brand systems. The work has become considerably more technical. The principle behind it has not moved.
